Russia cannot be understood through reason,
Its breadth cannot be measured in feet
It has a character all its own –
In Russia you can only believe.

Fedor Tiutchev (1803-1873)

Russia's political and cultural history is intriguing, the riches of its vast land is immeasurable, and the character of its people perplexing. The unfathomable nature of Russia, said its own poet Fedor Tiutchev, must not be approached with intellect but with faith.

Here at Holy Cross, the Russian Program combines the two ~ a love of Russian culture and a vibrant academic program ~ to prepare students for exciting careers and advanced degrees. At the same time, the program cultivates an appreciation for the importance and beauty of the Russian language and culture.

The Russian Program offers both a Major and a Minor. Student may choose among classes in Russian language, culture, literature, drama, and film. The Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies offers the Russian and East European Studies Student-Designed Minor, which allows students to study the politics and history of Russia in addition to its culture.
