ITALIAN
AT HOLY CROSS
The Italian program offers students opportunities to learn about Italian culture both inside and outside of the classroom, both on campus and abroad.
Each year more than 120 students enroll in Italian language, literature, and culture courses at Holy Cross. Our program offers both an Italian Major (10 courses) and Italian Minor (6 courses). Students may also pursue an Italian Studies major or minor (Italian combined with other disciplines, such as History, Visual Arts, Political Science, Music, and so on) through CISS (Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies). During their third year, students who have reached the intermediate level have the opportunity of studying abroad in Florence, Italy. The Holy Cross Florence Program offers a rigorous academic program, immersion in Italian family and community life, and the experience of living in a foreign country. Students who are interested in exploring Italian culture on campus may choose to participate in the Italian Club. In the past, the Italian Club has organized trips to the North End of Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts. The Italian program sponsors its own cultural events, as well, including Italian film series, a celebration of Carnevale, lectures, and dinners. Many students of Italian receive academic recognition for their achievements. Gamma Kappa Alpha (the Italian National Honor Society) invites outstanding majors and minors to be members; the Vannicelli Prize is awarded to the student who writes the best essay on Italian culture or literature; and scholarship opportunities, on the local, national, and international level, have been awarded to our students consistently through the years.
