Jonathan Wipplinger received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He works on the cultural intersection of music, culture, and literature in German history and thought, especially during the 20th century. His dissertation, “The Jazz Republic: Music, Race, and American Culture in Weimar Germany,” examined the role played by American popular culture in the formation and contestation of Germany in the 1920s. Currently, he is working on transforming this work for publication and is embarking on a new project that considers the relationship between music and German literature and culture. While at Michigan, Jonathan taught a broad range of German-language courses from elementary to advanced levels. These included intermediate courses on German Expressionism and the German image of America, or Amerikanismus, as well as advanced composition and literature courses. |
