Welcome
to the German section homepage! All students are welcome
to enroll in German classes. There are many possibilities
to learn about the German-speaking countries. You can
begin learning German now or build on your high school
courses. There are also courses in English for students
with little or no background in the German language.
The
German Program offers the German Major and German Minor.
The German Major is the traditional literature and culture
major. German minors must complete 6 courses in German.
The German Studies Major is an interdisciplinary major
offered through CISS (Center for Interdisciplinary and
Special Studies). Please click on the links for specific
requirements.
German
students have many opportunities to participate in program
activities. The annual German Christmas party is a Holy
Cross tradition. The German Club organizes an annual
Oktoberfest dinner as well as trips to Boston to see
German plays.
Sophomores
who will complete Intermediate German II (or higher)
should apply to study abroad in Berlin and Freiburg
during their junior year. These programs have been highly
rated by our returning HC students. Please click on
the link for specific requirements.
Outstanding
German students are awarded book prizes and certificates
of merit. Advanced students are encouraged to apply
for admission to Delta Phi Alpha, the German Honor Society.
Seniors with excellent records have several opportunities
for scholarships to study or work in Germany and Austria.
