Chinese Courses in Chinese

Elementary Chinese - Chinese 101-2 (Fall 2008-Spring 2009)
This course is an introduction to spoken and written Mandarin Chinese and the cultural contexts in which it is spoken.  Classes involve active student participation designed to develop speaking and listening skills.  Lab work and homework assignments build listening, reading and writing skills.  Chinese culture is introduced through language study and regularly scheduled events. Five class hours weekly. One and one-quarter units each semester.

Intermediate Chinese - Chinese 201-2 (Fall 2008-Spring 2009)
This course builds upon the oral and written skills and cultural knowledge developed at the elementary level of Chinese instruction.  It focuses on the strengthening of oral and written communication skills and on the continued development of cultural competency in Chinese through the discussion of written texts and multimedia resources.  Five class hours weekly. One and one-quarter units each semester.

Third Year Chinese -Chinese 301-2 (Fall 2008-Spring 2009) This course continues to build and strengthen skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing Chinese through the use of short stories, movies and music.  The class stresses active student participation and is conducted entirely in Chinese.  Five class hours weekly.  One and one-quarter units each semester.

Advanced Mandarin Chinese Conversation-Chinese 399

This course is designed for students with speaking skills in Mandarin Chinese. It is appropriate for non-fluent heritage speakers and for students who have had prior exposure to spoken Mandarin through residence in China. It meets 3 hours weekly.

Introduction to Literary Chinese - Chinese 409 and Chinese 410 (Fall 2008-Spring 2009)
An introduction to literary Chinese. This course is conducted in Mandarin Chinese and is appropriate for students who have completed at least three years of Chinese or study in the Holy Cross study abroad program.  One unit each semester.

Chinese Literature and Culture Classes in English

Introduction to Chinese Culture- Chinese 103 (Fall 2008)
This course introduces students to the basic elements of Chinese culture, which includes both the material and spiritual achievements made by the Chinese people throughout the long history of China.

Chinese Culture Through the Camera's Eye - Chinese 255 (Spring 2009)
This course uses Chinese cinema to explore contemporary Chinese culture.  Readings and Discussions are in English.  Films are in Chinese with English subtitles. Suitable for students with or without a background in Chinese studies.  One unit.
