Dinand
Library Instructional Services
I.
Reference Staff and Hours:
Reference Librarians are
eager to assist with your research. Our
Research hours at Dinand Library are:
Sunday:
2:00-10:00 p.m.
Monday - Thursday: 9:30 a.m. -10:00
p.m.
Friday: 9:30 -4:30 p.m.
You
may schedule a consultation with a Reference
Librarian if you would like extended reference
assistance.
In addition to our traditional on-demand
Reference Desk service, we also offer Online
Research Help through an instant messaging
service provided by Holy Cross in collaboration
with participating members of the Association
of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Holy
Cross Librarians will be monitoring the
service on: Sunday, 7- 8 pm; Monday, 1 -
2 pm; Tuesday, 12 - 1 pm; and Thursday,
8 - 9 pm.
II.
Researcher's Workshop:
This
is a new service provided by the library
staff and held in the Scalia Electronic
Classroom of the Dinand Library. On Monday
and Wednesday, from 7 - 8 pm, during the
academic year, a librarian will be available
to assist students with their research assignments
in the Scalia Electronic Classroom.
III.
Customized Research Instruction:
In
these custom-designed classes, students are
introduced to various research strategies,
and taught how to use and evaluate the library's
latest print and on-line resources relevant
to a particular course or discipline.
We will consult with you to develop one or
more classes that meet your course's unique
needs. For example, using your suggested topics,
a 50-minute class held in Dinand Library might
focus on developing research strategies, demonstrating
the use of the on-line catalog, periodical
indexes, and pertinent reference sources.
Or if you prefer, we can schedule your class
in a computer lab and focus your class entirely
on electronic resources. Both small and large
groups can be accommodated in the library,
computer lab or your classroom. Handouts and
bibliographies will be prepared for each class.
These classes are offered on a first come,
first served basis and should be scheduled
at least two weeks in advance. To schedule
a class, please contact any member of the
Reference Staff
or
fill out a Library
Instruction Request form.
IV.
Assignment Support:
We
are eager to help your students accomplish
their assignments more efficiently and thoroughly.
In order that we are better prepared to meet
the reference needs of large numbers of students
working on similar assignments, please inform
us of any upcoming assignments or projects
requiring library research. In this way, we
will be able to ensure equal access to the
best sources of the required information.
Please
contact the library one week in advance of
the assignment.
V.
Research Consultation:
Individual
students or faculty requiring more in-depth
research assistance are encouraged to schedule
an appointment with any member of the Reference
Staff. Scholars working on major projects
or theses may wish to consult a librarian
several times over the course of the semester
as they proceed with their research.
