The Fatherless Children of France

This exhibit, originally mounted for the 2004-5 academic year, is a collection of autographs, manuscripts, photographs and artwork from some of the greatest names in literature , art, politics and the military of the WWI era. A society created to help French war orphans intended to auction the material for a fund raiser. To prevent the collection from being broken up, Mrs. David Johnson bought the whole collection and donated it to Holy Cross in 1953 in memory of her husband who attended the Preparatory Class.   View the exhibit >

Building Spaces:
Holy Cross Architecture 1836-1935

This exhibit was originally mounted from February-June, 2002. Through photographs, music, stationary, blueprints and architectural proposals, paintings, and religious objects, the exhibit depicts images from Holy Cross’ predecessor institutions and significant people in the early life of the college.
Of particular interest are a cope and other religious items owned or used by Bishop James Healy, many of which were commissioned to celebrate his 25th anniversary as Bishop of Portland, ME. Bishop Healy was valedictorian of the first graduating class at Holy Cross in 1849. These items were loaned by the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland for the exhibit.   View the exhibit >
