Rev. Thomas E. Murphy, S.J.
Fifteenth President of Holy Cross
1906 - 1911
Thomas
E. Murphy was born in New York City on January 27, 1856. His primary
education was received in public schools after which he entered
St. Francis Xavier College, NY. In 1875, before graduation, he entered
the Society of Jesus in Quebec.
After classical studies at West Park, NY and theological
studies at Woodstock College, MD, he was ordained a priest on August
24, 1890. Following ordination he served as Dean
of Studies at Georgetown and then as President of St. Francis Xavier
College Studies and was appointed President of Holy Cross in 1906.
During his tenure the Preparatory Division of Holy Cross was dissolved.
Leaving Holy Cross in 1911, Rev. Murphy served
as administrator of Brooklyn College and then as Rector of St. Ignatius
Church, Brooklyn, until his death on December 14, 1933.
