Edward
Boone, the first alumnus President of Holy Cross, was born in Washington,
D.C. on February 27, 1833. He was educated in private schools and
entered Holy Cross in 1847, graduating in 1851. He then entered
the Society of Jesus on September 8, 1852.
After several years of teaching Humanities at
Jesuit schools, he completed his theological studies at Georgetown
where he was ordained on July 2, 1866. He resumed his teaching career
and also served in Jesuit churches in Leonardtown, MD and Boston,
MA. In 1878, he was appointed President of Holy Cross, leaving that
office in 1883. He again served as parish priest in the Church of
the Gesu, Philadelphia, and in 1890 he was also a prison chaplain
in Baltimore. He died at Loyola College, Baltimore on January 16,
1916.
