Rev. Edward A. McGurk, S.J.
Twelfth President of Holy Cross

Edward
A. McGurk was born in New York City, October 6, 1841. He studied
at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia and after graduation entered
the Society of Jesus in 1857. As a Scholastic
he taught Rhetoric at Holy Cross from 1861 to 1866. He made his
theological studies at Woodstock College, MD and was ordained a
priest in 1872.
After a teaching period at Boston College he served
as President of Loyola College, Baltimore, MD (1877-1885); President
of Gonzaga College, Washington, D.C. (1885-1890) and then as President
of Holy Cross (1893-1895). Sickness forced him to resign after two
years.
He died at the Jesuit House in Fairhaven, MA on
July 3, 1896. He is buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
