Rev. Patrick F. O'Gorman, S.J.
Vice Provincial of Region
1921-1924
Patrick F. O’Gorman was born in New York City July 11, 1867.
He attended St. Francis Xavier High School, entering the Society of Jesus August 14, 1884 at the novitiate in West
Park, NY. The following year this novitiate closed and he was sent to the novitiate in Frederick, MD. He studied
philosophy and theology at Woodstock, MD where he was also ordained by James Cardinal Gibbons in June 1899. His
tertainship was served at Florissant, MO and he spent one year teaching freshmen at St. Joseph’s College, Philadelphia, PA.
In 1902, he was appointed Prefect of Studies at the College of St. Francis, New York, NY and in 1906 he was assigned
Prefect of Studies at The Loyola School, New York, NY where he stayed until 1919. When Rev. Norbert de Boynes, SJ was
assigned as Visitor of the Province by Rome in December 1919, Rev. O’Gorman, SJ was appointed his Socius for two years. Then, he was
appointed Rector of St. Joseph’s College, Philadelphia, PA, but when New England became the New England Region in 1921, he
became its first Vice-Provincial, serving until 1924. In November,1924 he returned to New York and served as Rector at The
Loyola School and Regis High School, New York, NY. When the New England Region separated and formed its own province in 1926, he
did not become a member. He continued to serve the Maryland-New York Province until his death.
In 1930 he was named Prefect of Studies at Georgetown Preparatory School, Washington, D.C. In 1935 he was
appointed Spiritual Father, Student Counselor, and Librarian at the school. He died in Washington, D.C. on March 15, 1940.
