Rev. Edward M. O'Flaherty, S.J.

Edward M. O’Flaherty was born October 29, 1934 to Edward M. and Rose O’Flaherty
in Boston, MA. He was educated at Boston College High School, MA. On August 14, 1952 he entered the Society at Shadowbrook, Lenox, MA
for two years of novitiate. He studied philosophy at Facultes de Saint-Albert de Louvain, Belgium, earning a degree in 1959. He taught
Latin, French, and History at Cheverus High School, Portland, ME from 1959 until 1961 then returned to Weston College, Weston, MA for
theology studies, earning an MA in 1966. He also was ordained there in 1965. His tertainship was at St. Robert’s Hall, Pomfret, CT from
1966 until 1967. He studied anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, earning an MA in 1972. He also taught anthropology at the
University of Pennsylvania in the Fall of 1970 and from 1971 until 1973. He was also visiting lecturer of moral theology at St. Charles
Seminary, Philadelphia, PA from 1971 until 1972. From 1973 until 1976 he taught anthropology in the Sociology Department at Boston
College. In 1976 he was appointed rector of the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, CA and in 1979 he was awarded a PhD in
anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Also in 1979, he was named Provincial of the New England Province, serving until 1985, when he was appointed
President of Weston School of Theology, Cambridge, MA. In 1992 he was named director of the Boston Archdiocesan Offices of Ecumenical
and Interreligious Affairs and Pastoral Support of Priests, Brighton, MA. In 1994 he also became assistant rector and house consultant
at Boston College.
