Rev. James T. McCormick, S.J.
Second Provincial of Region
1932-1937
James T. McCormick was born in Taunton, MA on February 21, 1876. He
attended Woburn High School, Boston College High School, and Boston College, entering the Society of Jesus in 1896 at Frederick, MD.
He studied at Woodstock College in Woodstock, MD where he was also ordained in 1911 by James Cardinal Gibbons. His tertianship was
at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepisie, NY. As a scholastic, he taught at St. Francis Xavier College, New York, NY and at the College
of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. After his ordination as a priest, he also taught at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. From 1917
until 1925, he was vice president of Boston College. From 1925 until 1931, he was rector of Boston College High School and from 1931
until 1932 he was rector of Weston College.
He was appointed Provincial of the New England Province in 1932, serving until 1937 when he returned to
Weston College as spiritual father. From 1940 until 1941, he was an instructor of tertians at St. Robert’s Hall, Pomfret, CT. In
1941, he was appointed spiritual father at the College of the Holy Cross, serving in the position until his death on March 18, 1950
at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester, MA.
