Presidents of the College of the Holy Cross:
Rev. John M. Fox, S.J.

Eighteenth President of Holy Cross
1927 - 1933

President Fox    John M. Fox was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on February 20, 1881. Educated in public schools, he entered Boston College from which he graduated in June, 1902.
   After graduation he entered the Society of Jesus and made his philosophical studies at Woodstock College, MD from 1905 to 1908. After two years of teaching at St. Francis Xavier College, New York City and theological studies at Woodstock College, MD he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Gibbons on June 28, 1913.
    Rev. Fox came to Holy Cross in 1917 to remain until 1933. He performed a variety of duties but chiefly lectured in Ethics and Economics. In October 1927 he was appointed President of Holy Cross to succeed Bishop Dinand. Before he left office, in 1933, plans for the new dining room, Kimball Hall, had been drawn up and most of the funds collected.
   He left Holy Cross in 1933 to be first Rector and Tertian Instructor of the New England Province of Jesuits. His term of office as Rector came to an end in July, 1939 but be continued as Instructor of this final year of spiritual formation of Jesuit priests. He died suddenly on February 15, 1940 at the Tertianship, Pomfret, Connecticut. His body rests in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
