Rev. Anthony F. Ciampi, S.J.
Fourth
President of Holy Cross
1851 - 1854 1857 - 1861 1869 - 1873
Anthony
F. Ciampi was born in Rome, January 29, 1816 and entered the Society
of Jesus in September, 1832. During his studies in Italy he volunteered
to work in the United States. He was ordained a priest in 1847.
During his long career he served three times as
President of Holy Cross; President of Loyola College, Baltimore;
as missionary in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island; as Rector
of Jesuit churches in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. During his
first term as President of Holy Cross a disastrous fire destroyed
Fenwick Hall and part of the East Wing. Father Ciampi directed the
efforts to rebuild the College, which was reopened in 1853.
