Samuel
Cahill was born in Ireland on July 24, 1844 and came to this country
with his parents as a small boy. He entered the Society of Jesus
in 1868 at Frederick, MD.
After philosophical and theological studies at
Woodstock College, MD, he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Gibbons
in 1880.
Rev. Cahill held a long series of administrative
posts at Loyola College, Baltimore, St. Joseph's College, Philadelphia,
at Fordham and Boston College. In 1887, he was appointed President
of Holy Cross. Ill health forced him to resign after only two years.
He left for Colorado and New Mexico, where he labored until 1897.
His last appointment was Rector of St. Joseph's Church, Philadelphia
where he died on October 25, 1910.
