      Description: "The primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data that are related to education in the United States and other nations."


    National Criminal Justice Reference Service (free online)
     
      Description: "A federally funded resource offering justice and substance abuse information to support research, policy, and program development worldwide." Includes, the NCJRS Abstracts Database that indexes more than 180,000 criminal justice publications.



    National Science Foundation (free online)
     
      Description: An independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" Provides "20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities."

    National Toxicology Program (free online)
     
      Description: An interagency government program "whose mission is to evaluate agents of public health concern by developing and applying the tools of modern toxicology and molecular biology." Provides full-text access to NTP studies online.




    NetLibrary: E-books
     
      Description: Holy Cross has access to over 3500 electronic books that were originally purchased from NetLibrary. Books may be checked out from any computer for 4 hours after an account has been established at a library computer terminal.

    New Catholic Encyclopedia    (Full Text: second edition)
     
      Description: Created under the guidance of Catholic University of America’s Reverend Berard Marthaler, O.F.M.Conv., and Thomson Gale, the electronic edition of this 15-volume set provides full-text access to signed “articles on theology, philosophy, history, literary figures, saints, musicians and much more.”

    New York Times Historical   (Full Text: 1851--1999)
     
      Description: The New York Times (1851 - 1999) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue. For current editions of the New York Times use Lexis-Nexis.

      Description: "This site provides thermochemical, thermophysical, and ion energetics data compiled by NIST under the Standard Reference Data Program."


    North American Industry Classification (free online)
     
      Description: Provides data on the total number of establishments, mid-March employment, first quarter and annual payroll, and number of establishments by nine employment-size classes by detailed industry for all counties in the United States and the District of Columbia .” Data may be tabulated by county, zip code, Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), or New England County Metropolitan Areas (NECMAs).

      Description: A "source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. Revised every two years, the Handbook describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations." Produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and US Department of Labor.

      Description: A "directory of Ocean Data and Information related web sites" produced by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

    OED - Oxford English Dictionary  (current edition)
     
      Description: The Web version of the 20-volume Second Edition. The OED serves as the accepted authority on the evolution of the English  language over the last millennium. It traces the usage of  words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources and covers words from across the English-speaking world, from North America to South Africa, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean.

      Description: Papers First indexes "every published congress, symposium, conference, exposition, workshop and meeting received by The British Library Document Supply Centre." Over 4.9 million records held in a variety of subject fields.

    Patent Database (free online)
     
      Description: The database consists includes information about all US patents (including utility, design, reissue, plant patents and SIR documents) from the first patent issued in 1790 to the most recent issue week. Produced by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

    Penn World Table (free online)
     
      Description: “The Penn World Table provides purchasing power parity and national income accounts converted to international prices for 188 countries for some or all of the years 1950-2004. The European Union or the OECD provide more detailed purchasing power and real product estimates for their countries and the World Bank makes current price estimates for most PWT countries at the GDP level.”

    Pew Hispanic Center (free online)
     
      Description: The Pew Hispanic Center is a nonpartisan research organization supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts that “conducts public opinion surveys” of the U.S. Hispanic population. The Center focuses on eight key subject areas: Demography, Economics, Education, Identity, Immigration, Labor, Politics, and Remittances (dollars sent home).

Provides publication information including, titles, formats, publisher addresses, editor contacts, circulation data, and ISSN numbers.

    PubMed (1966-present)
     
      Description: A service of the National Library of Medicine, indexes over 11 million citations from more than 4,600 biomedical journals in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences back to the mid-1960's. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts.
