Historian's Craft

This course is an introduction to historical methods and to historiography-- that is, how history is written and interpreted, and how the discipline or a topic within it has evolved. Students will learn how historians formulate questions or lines of inquiry, how to locate and read primary sources, how to use secondary sources, how to develop research topics that are incisive and focused, and how to organize and present one's research in oral and written form. This course is required of all history majors starting with the Class of 2009.
