Format
You are responsible for reading all material listed on this syllabus which means that you should read, analyze, evaluate and be prepared to question the conclusions of each author. Please bring whatever texts we are reading to every class meeting and come prepared with comments or questions.

Three analytical essays and one research paper are due during the semester.  Deadlines for the papers are listed on the syllabus.  No late papers will be accepted.  Under special circumstances and with a note from your class dean, you may make arrangements to make up an assignment.

An essay on the film Dangerous Liaisons and the novel Candide will be your first assignment.  Length is 3-5 pages, typed double-spaced.  The paper is due on Thursday, Sept 14.

A 12-15 page research paper on a topic of your choice is due in the final week of classes.  This final paper will give you a chance to investigate in depth a topic in French history relevant to the course.  A formal proposal for the paper which states your topic, briefly sketches your research strategy, and cites a working bibliography of 5-7 sources is due on Thursday, November 16 (about 3 pages including bibliography).  The paper itself is due on Wednesday, December 6.

Papers will be graded for depth, accuracy, insight, and use of evidence.  Some comments on writing history can be found by clicking Writing Across the Curriculum. All written work for the course should conform to the guidelines in the Research and Style Guide on The History Homepage.
