Format
You should expect to read all of the material on this syllabus in advance of the discussion of the topics as listed.  Please bring whatever texts we are reading to every class meeting and come prepared with comments or questions on the assigned material. 

Writing
Three analytical essays based on the reading material on topics to be assigned are required of each student; these must be double-spaced with textual references included.  The deadlines for these writing assignments are listed on the syllabus.  No late work will be accepted except for special circumstances or with a note from your class dean.  You must make arrangements with me to make up an assignment. See the History Department's Research and Style Guide on the History homepage for formatting and citation style. 

Grading
Papers will be graded for depth, accuracy, insight, and use of evidence.  Grading will be based on the following point scale: 20 points for each paper; 20 points for midterm examination; 20 points for final examination; 20 points for class participation.
