Biographical Sketch
CHARLES S. (CHICK) WEISS, PH.D. received the B.S. degree (1970) from the University of Scranton and the Ph.D. (1974) in physiological psychology and neurobiology from Ohio University. He was an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow in Neuroscience at Colgate University and a Research Fellow at the Brain Research Laboratory at Syracuse University (1974-75).
Chick joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Holy Cross in 1975, is an Associate Professor, and chaired the Department from 1984 to 1989. From 1981 to 1983, he was Fellow and Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine where he re-trained in human neuropsychology and behavioral neurology. Chick served as the Holy Cross Coordinator of Grants and Research (1989-95) and is now Director of the Office of Grants and Corporate and Foundation Giving.
He acts as the institutional officer on the College’s Human Subjects Committee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Scholarly Misconduct Committee and Intellectual Property Committee. Chick is also currently the Project Shepherd for the College's new science building project. He has been a participant, writer, editor and panelist for Project Kaleidoscope (Pkal), is a member of a Keck Foundation/Pkal Consultant Team, reviews proposals for the National Science Foundation and has authored 15 scientific papers. Chick has written many successful proposals and coordinated projects to improve education and infrastructure of the College’s arts, humanities and sciences. He is involved in the funding and operation of programs (arts, humanities, library, technology, mathematics, social and natural sciences) which link Holy Cross and the Worcester Public Schools (or other non-profit institutions, including Nativity School of Worcester).
Chick is Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Directors of Children’s Friend in Worcester (the region’s oldest child welfare agency, founded in 1849) and was Co-chair of its successful 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, Central Massachusetts Chapter, is Board Secretary, Chair of its Development Committee and was a member of its Capital Campaign and Strategic Planning Steering Committees. He is a five-gallon blood donor. He is a founding Trustee of the Beverly School, a school for disadvantaged youngsters that is planned to open in Nairobi, Kenya in 2008. Chick is a founding Trustee and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Nativity School of Worcester, a middle school for economically disadvantaged boys.
Chick lives in Worcester with his wife Gayle, who is Vice President of Law and Managing Council for Unum Group Corporation, and son Joe, a member of the rock band Four Year Strong, under contract to I Surrender Records and touring the nation. They are avid skiers and sailors.
