Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute Undergraduate Scholarships
This past summer the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute offered a new undergraduate scholarship opportunity which will hopefully be repeated for 2008. SEASSI awarded 20 scholarships to undergraduates to attend SEASSI 2007, an intensive summer language program offering instruction in nine languages of Southeast Asia: Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese. The program was held on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus from June 16 through August 8, 2008. Students received two semesters of academic credit for language study at SEASSI. The scholarship provided payment of tuition, fees, and an $1,800 living stipend for the 8-week SEASSI program. A very modest travel supplement, ranging from $0 to $200 depending on the student's travel expenses was also included in the scholarship. The application deadline for the SEASSI Undergraduate Scholars competition was April 16, 2007.
