GENERAL INFORMATION

The Mellon Fellowship is a highly prestigious and valuable opportunity for students to prepare for careers of teaching and scholarship in the humanistic disciplines by providing support for first year of graduate school.  Though it is limited to that year, and cannot be renewed, that is often the most difficult year to obtain financial support.  Once you have established yourself in a program, you are more apt to be offered assistance from the program itself, either in the form of a teaching assistantship or a research assistantship.  The Mellon Foundation awards 85 fellowships each year, tenable at any United States or Canadian university.

The application procedure is carried out simultaneously with your application for graduate school itself.  You will be required to submit both a 1,000-word statement explaining your interest in your chosen field, and a 5- to 7-page sample of your academic writing.  Detailed instructions and tips on completing the application are provided at the Mellon website:
http://www.woodrow.org/mellon/.

If your application is favorably reviewed, you will be invited for an interview early in March.  Your expenses will be reimbursed by the Mellon Foundation.  If you would like a mock interview for practice, be sure to contact the Graduate Studies Office.  Decisions of winners will be made based on all the parts of the application and are made public in early April.
