 GENERAL INFORMATION

This fellowship is particularly appealing to students in the Teacher Certification Program and to students majoring in Political Science or History.  It provides funds to support your achieving a Master's degree in the study of the framing and history of the U.S. constitution as you prepare to teach American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level.  At least one fellowship is awarded in each state and in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. territories.  Once you have received your degree, you are obligated to teach those subjects to grades 7-12 for at least one year for every year of support you have received.

The $24,000 stipend is intended to cover costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board.  You may use it in graduate programs in American history, political science or education at any accredited university.  All fellows are expected to participate in a four-week summer institute at Georgetown University in the year after you have begun your study; costs of the institute are borne by the Madison Foundation.
