 GENERAL INFORMATION

The Golub Corporation is the parent company of Price Chopper Supermarkets, a chain predominantly in the Northeast United States.  Its Foundation offers annual scholarships, many designated for children of employees or for undergraduate education.  One, however, is for applicants to graduate school.  The relatively modest award is intended to be used toward tuition, if other scholarships do not suffice.  There seem to be no restrictions on the field of study or the level of degree sought, so this is a good opportunity to seek help for medical, dental, veterinary, business, or law school, as well as for Master's programs that tend not to be well supported in other competitions.

In addition to a one-page application form, you need to provide a sheet detailing your honors and awards as well as extracurricular, civic and leadership activities; a transcript; scores for the appropriate graduate admission test (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT); three suitable letters of reference; and an original essay.  For the essay, you are asked to "describe the reasons that you are pursuing an advanced degree.  Please include why you think the Golub Foundation should award you this scholarship."  This may seem like a vague challenge, but if you can explain not only why you should receive the scholarship, but also why it is appropriate that it should come from the Golub Foundation, you might be ahead of the game.  In particular, if you have ever sacked groceries at Price Chopper (or anywhere else), have any reflections on the role of supermarkets in modern society, or can comment about the value of companies establishing scholarship programs, you should mention it.  At the same time, use good judgment.  Do not stretch beyond what is reasonable or consistent with your own views.  For general advice on essays, you might find helpful material in Proposal Writing: the Art of Persuasion.
