Madame Defarge is the wife of ErnestDefarge, a former
servant for Dr. Manette and is currently a wine shop owner. Madame Defarge's
role is very important because she had to be alert at all times for the
safety and security of the Jacques. Madame Defarge uses signals such as
the rose to tell the Jacques an outsider is present. There is hardly
ever a moment when she isn't knitting. This is because any new information
that will benefit the Jacques is knitted on to a quilt.
Madame Defarge is also the leader
of the group of women Dickens compares to Furies. They are angry woman
who get together to kill the nobles.
Although she is a woman, Madame
Defarge is the most feared character in A Tale of Two Cities.
