Greetings from Massachusetts! The Matheson clan hopes you enjoy this combination birth announcement/holiday card/change of address notification. You are getting this handy three-in-one letter solely for your own convenience not because one of the Matheson household members is both Scottish and an economist. (Cheap! Cheap!) As you might guess from this envelope’s contents, 2004 has been a rather busy year for us. It all really started back in January when Victor was offered a job at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. By the way, for some reason Worcester is pronounced roughly “Wuhstah” by local residents. Don’t ask us why. We’re still having trouble understanding New Englanders in general. The Holy Cross job was nice for two reasons. First, it is finally a permanent job after many years of visiting positions. Second, Worcester is only about 45 miles away from Springfield, the home of Baystate Medical Center, Jolie’s employer. Wow, both of us gainfully employed in roughly the same area. At the end of the school year in June we moved from Williamstown to our new house in Sturbridge, MA, essentially the only town between Springfield and Worcester. By this time, Jolie was conveniently 6 months pregnant, a plot she likely “conceived” solely to avoid having to move furniture. Sturbridge itself has about 8,000 residents, roughly the same number of people that inhabited the 3-block radius around our condo in Chicago, and is best known for its major tourist attraction, Old Sturbridge Village, the largest historical re-enactment museum in the Northeastern U.S. Except for having to churn our own butter and weave our own clothing, Sturbridge is a great place to live. Well, things got a bit more exciting as Jolie went into labor on the very first day of classes at Holy Cross. Nothing like skipping work your first day on the job. Fortunately, we’re sure that this will be the last time that our new little girl will do anything inconvenient. Lara Sage was named after the initials of her Great-Grandmothers (Lorayne, Agatha, Rose, and Alice) and Grandmothers (Sue Ann, Gail, and Ester). Fortunately she wasn’t a boy or she would have had to be named Lrvl Jrjj Matheson, a popular name in the Czech Republic, but hard to pronounce elsewhere.
