Diversity Education at Holy Cross;
More than just talk...
Welcome!
Consider
this:
The
inherent characteristics of human beings include
having a natural capacity to be in relationship
with each other, meaning we enjoy giving and
receiving affection, enjoy communicating and
co-operating.
The
Human Side of Human Beings
Harvey Jackins
And
this:
True
recognition of our human diversity is not just
about the presence of others; it is about the
richness that comes to our lives as a result
of the genuine relationships we can have with
each other. Because of how we are inherently
as humans beings, the pain is not in the connection,
it is in the distance! It is this distance that
ignorance brews, stereotypes gain validity,
and rigidity, fear, and mistrust fester
And this:
When
those who have the power to name and to socially
construct reality choose not to see you or hear
you, whether you are dark-skinned, old, disabled,
female, or speak with a different accent or
dialect than theirs, when someone with the authority
of a teacher, say, describes the world and you
are not in it, there is a moment of psychic
dis-equilibrium, as if you looked into a mirror
and saw nothing."
The
Feminist Classroom
Adrienne Rich
And
finally:
To
do something about the trouble around difference,
we have to talk about it, but most of the time
we don't, because it feels too risky.
Privilege,
Power, and Difference
Allan G. Johnson
