Other
Matters Concerning Faculty Evaluations
Faculty
who do not attend all the department meetings at which a faculty
member is evaluated may not sign either the unanimous, majority,
or minority report of the department. The basic reason for
this position is that a person should be present for the full
discussion and debate during all meetings at which the essential
elements of the report(s) are developed.
If a faculty
member is unable to attend the meeting(s), he or she may submit
a statement, which would become part of the department evaluation,
that is, to be forwarded to the Office of the Dean through
the department Chair. A recommendation (positive or negative)
should be explicitly made and counted as part of the department
vote. The Chair should give an unsigned copy of the statement
to the faculty member.
After
the department reports have been signed and submitted to the
Office of the Dean, those faculty charged with the responsibility
of evaluating their department colleagues should be able to
read the evaluations, both majority and minority reports,
as well as any separate statements.
