I
remember my college experience: The mixed feelings of fear
and excitement at the thought of being in college; the questioning
of my abilities, "Can I make it?" "Will I succeed
here?" I was quite conscious of the odds weighed against
me as a first-generation college student, coming from a largely
urban public school setting when I entered Connecticut College;
a private, highly selective, upper class New England institution,
similar in many ways to Holy Cross. There was a chance that
I would not succeed. Thankfully, in spite of the odds stacked
against me, I realized success on several levels, so that
the overall tenor of my higher education experience was most
rewarding and fulfilling.
What made the difference for me? I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me. Why? The institution itself played
an important role by providing resources such as academic
advisors, mentors and a social framework that was nurturing
and empowering to help facilitate my success. But it was Christ
in me, working through me, helping me daily to make decisions
of how I would use the available resources to maximize my
potential. In short, the resources were available, but I needed
to make the conscious decision to use them. For me that power
came from above.
Since my college years, I have had some of the best professional
roles, all of which have involved my working to assist, support
and empower students. While the goals and expectations of
students are as varied as the students themselves, each wants
to be a part of a community that understands and supports
them. My role as Associate Director for Academic Services
and Learning Resources and Director of the Passport
Program provides me with yet another opportunity to do
just this.
I would like to help students to not just make it in college,
but instead, to maximize the resources that will ensure their
greatest success. I encourage students to find that source
of inner strength and to stop by the Office of Academic Services
and Learning Resources to seek out some of the resources available
to them.
As students, you have great potential to do better and better.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to the synergies
that can be as a result of us working together, driven by
the Inspiration that dwells within.
