“Finding a Spiritual Home: Where Do Jewish Deaf
Go?” will be an interactive dialogue with the
goal of identifying strategies for finding a spiritual
home for Jewish Deaf. Questions such as the following
will be addressed: Where do Jewish Deaf go to identify
pathways to carry on the Jewish traditions in this secular
society? Why are there large numbers of Jewish
Deaf remaining unaffiliated from becoming members of
synagogues and local Jewish Deaf organizations?
Who will continue to carry the torch and keep the Jewish
Deaf flame burning on behalf of the Jewish Deaf community?
This workshop is intended for a range of participants:
Rabbis and hearing individuals in the Jewish community
to learn how to ensure better access for Deaf community
members; Jewish Deaf individuals to strategize how to
become more informed and involved; and, interpreters
to learn what their role is in helping to provide access.
Marla Berkowitz, who is Deaf and fluent in American
Sign Language, has presented extensively throughout
the USA and in Israel about Judaism and the Jewish Deaf.
She is a Wexner Alumna with an MA in Jewish Education
from The Jewish Theological Seminary, and is co-founder

This event is Part III in a series of workshops related
