Catholic Studies Reading Group

For 2002-2003, the Catholic Studies Reading Group is coordinated by Tom Landy and John Schmalzbauer, and is open to all Holy Cross faculty by pre-registration. Those wishing to attend should contact Pat Hinchliffe, phinchli@holycross.edu.

On the dates scheduled below, we will meet in Hogan for dinner at 6 PM, and discussion from 7:15 to 8:30 PM.

October 23, 2003 - Mark Jordan Asa Griggs Candler Professor, Department of Religion, Emory University, discusses his book The Ethics of Sex. Open to Holy Cross faculty by pre-registration.

Wednesday, February 18, 2004 - Paige Reynolds leads a discussion of the Kate O'Brien novel The Land of Spices.

Tuesday, March 2, 2004
- John O'Malley, S.J. joins us to discuss his forthcoming Four Cultures of Catholicism (Harvard University Press).

Tuesday April 20, 2004 - Gauvin Alexander Bailey of Clark University joins us for a discussion of his new book, Between Renaissance and Baroque: Jesuit Art in Rome, 1565-1610 (University of Toronto Press, 2003).

Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - Notre Dame historian John McGreevey discusses his forthcoming book, Catholicism and American Freedom: A History.

February 18, 2003 - Jim McCartin discusses his research, "The Love of Things Unseen: Catholic Prayer and the Moral Imagination in Twentieth Century United States."

Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, CREC Visiting Fellow Bruce Morrill, S.J. will lead a discussion on the balance between practice and objectivity in Catholic studies. Our starting point will be a text of the 2001 Presidential address by Rebecca Chopp at the American Academy of Religion, entitled "Beyond the Founding Fratricidal Conflict: A Tale of Three Cities."

Tuesday, October 22, 2002 -
Historian James O'Toole will join us to discuss his new book, Passing for White: Race, Religion, and the Healy Family, 1820-1920.

Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - Mat Schmalz leads a discussion on his current research on "Little Audrey."

Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - "The Poetry of Billy Collins:  A Subject for Catholic Studies?" A look at poems from HC alumnus Billy Collins' recent collection, Sailing Alone Around the Room , including a discussion of how Catholic Studies should approach a poet like Collins, and what that says about the parameters of this emerging field.

"What is Catholic Place?" - A discussion led by John Schmalzbauer in conjunction with the Cantor Gallery exhibition, "Sacred Spaces: Legacy and Responsibility." 

Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - Early Jesuit Churches in Germany -
Jeffrey Chipps Smith, University of Texas, will make a presentation on 
early Jesuit churches in Germany and their attempts to create the ideal sacred spaces.

Tuesday, November 6, 2001 - Rev. Edward Yarnold, S.J., "The Healing of Divisions" - Fr. Yarnold, one of  two International Visiting Jesuit Fellows at Holy Cross this Fall, is a distinguished theologian and ecumenist form Oxford University, and a key figure in the Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue.  

Tuesday, October 16, 2001 Discussion of Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel - Profs. MaryLee Ledbetter and Bob Garvey will comment on the book in its historical context, and the uses of Galileo in later times.

Wednesday, September 19, 2001 - Forgiveness - The conference is the text.  Please plan on attending the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture's inaugural conference on Forgiveness, Friday evening, September 14 and Saturday, September 15.  We will meet for dinner and discussion on Wednesday, September 19 for dinner and discussion.
