Thomas M. Landy
Thomas M. Landy is Associate Director of the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture
at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester , MA , where he teaches sociology.
The Center, launched in 2001, seeks to strengthen the religious identity
and mission of Holy Cross by sponsoring programs and events that reflect
both Catholic and interfaith concerns.
He is the founder and director of Collegium, a
colloquy on faith and intellectual life. Founded in 1993,
Collegium organizes summer workshop-retreats on faith, vocation
and intellectual life for faculty from its 64 member Catholic
colleges and universities, and for graduate students from
a broad array of institutions.
Tom earned a B.A. in History at Fairfield University ,
and M.A. in International Relations at the University of
Chicago , an M.Div. from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology,
and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Boston University , under the
direction of Peter Berger and Alan Wolfe. While at Weston,
Tom also served as Associate Project Director of the Leadership
Education Project at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of
Government.
A sociologist
of religion, he has written several articles on the colleges
founded by Catholic nuns, and conducted research on Catholics’ attitudes
towards sacrifice. He edited a volume, As Leaven for the World: Catholic Reflections
on Faith, Vocation, and the Intellectual Life ( Franklin
, WI Sheed and Ward, 2001).
