Scholarships:

Rhodes: 2-3 years of study at Oxford University in any field. Most competitive. Strong academic record, leadership in social service or extracurricular activities, athletics also an asset. Nomination by the College through the Graduate Studies Committee. 32 awards nationally. Final application deadline in early October.

Marshall: 2-3 years of study at any university in Great Britain in any field. As competitive as the Rhodes. Perhaps more emphasis on academic record than extracurricular record. GPA of 3.7 after 1st year required. Nomination by the College through the Graduate Studies Committee. 40 awards nationally. Final application deadline in early October.

Madison: Two years of graduate study in the U.S. for M.A. or M.A.T. for students intending to enter seconday school teaching in American History or Social Studies or Government. Award of $24,000. At least one nominee from each state. Application deadline in early March.

Rotary: A year of study overseas. Any academic field. Public speaking ability and social service record strong assets. Apply through your hometown club or through the Worcester/Auburn club through the Graduate Studies in early December. Scholarship awards one year after application process.



Fellowships

 

Watson: Holy Cross is one of 48 liberal arts colleges in the Watson Fellowship Program. College nominates four candidates. One or two awards go to each college. Watson is for independent field study on a project of your special interest -- not study at a university. Projects may involve several countries. Good academic record required but more emphasis on creative proposal (in any field of investigation) and on strong, independent character of candidate. Foreign language facility may be a factor in selection depending on the project. 65 awards of $15,000. Application deadline in early September of senior year. Plan your project in junior year.

Mellon: Intended to attract potential college/university teachers in Humanities. $12,750 for first year of graduate study in the U.S. 80 awards. Application deadline in early December.

Goldwater: College nominates four sophomores or juniors in Math, Physics, Biology or Chemistry. Selection by departments with nomination by the Graduate Studies Committee. Only for students planning on Ph.D. graduate study in these fields and a career in teaching and research (not Premed students). $7,000 toward undergraduate tuition. 90 awards.

Truman: College nominates four juniors through the Graduate Studies Committee in early October with an application deadline of December 1. Strong academic record and leadership or service in politics and community service. Provides $30,000 for graduate school for students planning a career in government or public service. Law and medical school is usually not applicable. 85 awards, at least one from each state. This is a very prestigious award and requires advanced planning.



Grants

Fulbright: Research. One year of study at an overseas university in any field. Number of awards varies by country. Foreign language at least at intermediate level. Strong academic record. Carefully designed study proposal. While all fields are encouraged, more science students should apply especially to Germany, France, Italy, Israel. Application through Graduate Studies Committee early in fall of senior year. Final application date is 31 October. All Fulbright Fellowships provide tuition, living expenses, travel cost and insurance. Chance of success is reasonably good.

Fulbright: Performing Arts. One year of overseas study at a university or art center. Performance in music, theater, studio art. Application through Graduate Studies Committee with final application due October 31.



Teaching

Fulbright: Teaching Assistantships. English teaching assistants in Germany and France (especially) but also in Belgium, Taiwan and Korea. Apply in Fall of senior year through Graduate Studies Committee. Also apply by March 1st independently for Austrian Teaching Assistantship listed in the Fulbright Fellowship brochure in the Graduate Studies Office. German and French students have good success with this award.
