Spring 2005

The department is blessed with many excellent, highly motivated students who are help to make the college a better place by their intellectual and service contributions. It is a difficult task each year to select from a highly talented group where many are deserving of such accolades.

Foundation Award

(yes a chemistry award for a bio major!)

The Rev. John W. Flavin, S.J., Award in Biology

Julie Hugo '05

For the fourth-year biology major who has shown "excellence in scientific achievement, significant humanitarian service, or contribution to the vitality of the Biology Department and the College".

Julie was also one of the recipients of the 2005 Holy Cross College Presidential Service Awards.

Julie graduates near the top of a class of excellent biology students. She was a three-year member of the student advisory committee and served as co-chair during her senior year. Julie was also an invaluable and willing participant during the process of interviewing candidates for faculty positions.
She was also a member of the Biological Psychology Concentration. Julie is headed to medical school at Rochester University.

The Teresa Churilla Book Award in Biology

Elizabeth Mills '07

Awarded to the second-year biology major who best exemplifies the ideals of intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and scientific promise.

Betsy has maintained close to a perfect grade point average. She was recently admitted to the Biological Psychology concentration and will be doing research in Professor Cara Constance's lab.

 

The Crompton Gold Medal

Kate Freeman '05

Given for the best scientific essay or research paper submitted during the school year among the departments of biology, chemistry and physics.

Kate was selected as the recipient of the Crompton Gold Medal based on her Honors Thesis "Coincident Genetic Events in Yeast".
Kate is headed to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a former recipient of the Teresa Churilla Book Award.

Brian DeChristopher '05

Brian's interests are in the chemistry of biologically active compounds. Brian did directed research project "Synthetic Studies on Octosyl Acid A" was done with Professor Kevin Quinn in the Chemistry Department. Brian will begin his work towards a PhD in chemistry this fall at Stanford University.
