Research Interests
My work as a wildlife biologist with the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey focuses on assessing population trends and estimating life history parameters for species of special concern to the U.S. Department of the Interior. My primary research is on the population ecology of the Florida manatee, a coastal marine mammal listed as endangered due to its small population size, degraded habitat and high mortality from collisions with boats. I am using mark-recapture statistical models to estimate annual survival rates and reproduction rates and to identify human and environmental factors that affect these rates. This information is being used by wildlife managers to assess population status and to determine management policies.
