Signing up for the FYP
Participation
in the FYP is voluntary and open to every student
admitted to Holy Cross. The only criterion for
entering the program is a willingness to participate
fully in the FYP, to live in Hanselman Hall, and
to pursue with faculty and other students important
intellectual, social and ethical questions. Space
in the program is limited by the size of Hanselman
Hall to approximately 160 incoming students. If
demand for the program exceeds the available space,
applicants will be chosen randomly from those
who apply for the program.
Students
apply to the FYP in June, after they are admitted
to Holy Cross and decide to enroll here. The
application is part of a packet of material
concerning course selection for first-year students
at the College. At the time of application,
students also have the opportunity to list preferences
for their FYP seminar.
The
FYP Commitment
The faculty have designed the FYP to provide
students with a heightened opportunity for intellectual
and social engagement that will provide students
a strong start to their college careers and
will make a difference for a lifetime. In order
to teach in the FYP, faculty dedicate themselves
to a year of participation in the common curricular
and co-curricular activities of the program.
Students are asked to make a matching commitment:
-
to enroll in a continuing fall and spring
seminar;
-
to reside in Hanselman Hall for the first
year with the other FYP students; and
-
to become involved in the co-curricular events
that form an integral part of the FYP experience.
The
great success of the FYP over the years is due
in large part to the commitment students and
faculty make to learn together, to build community
together. We would like to invite prospective
students to consider participation in the FYP
to help build an ethical community alive with
ideas and to make their Holy Cross experience
both integrated and integrating.
