FYP Common Readings: 2006-2007

In order to bring FYP students and faculty together to discuss the theme of the program as it relates to fundamental questions about the human condition, a minimum of three weeks during each semester are devoted to the reading of common texts. Typically, students read the first common text of the year over the summer and spend the first week of the program discussing it. The remainder of the texts are spread throughout the year.

The texts represent the wide-ranging interests of the FYP faculty and draw upon their extensive teaching experience. The texts are chosen not only to shed light on the theme but to introduce students to diverse modes of thought and forms of expression. The common readings have included classic and contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction, poetry, film, drama and music.

The common readings and schedule for this year's FYP are:

  • Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman

  • The Republic by Plato, Allan Bloom (translator)

  • Several essays from The Gift of Good Land by Wendell Berry

  • Several chapters from Collapse by Jared Diamond

  • Hamlet by William Shakespeare

  • The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy
