The Concentration in Peace and Conflict Studies

The Concentration in Peace and Conflict Studies is a multidisciplinary program available to all students who wish to complement their major field with courses on world peace and social justice.

The Concentration is administered through the Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies (CISS).  Each year CISS and Peace and Conflict Studies bring visiting experts in a variety of peace, conflict, and justice issues to Holy Cross to teach topics courses and give public lectures.

Why Concentrate in Peace and Conflict Studies?

The purpose of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program is to educate women and men for the responsibility of citizenship in an age of nuclear weapons; regional, ethnic, and religious conflicts; environmental deterioration; and global economic interdependence.  It seeks to give students the motivation and competence to deal effectively with threats to peace, justice, and human survival.  The program offers the environment and opportunity to:

  • imagine a more just world.
  • examine political, economic, ideological, ethnic, religious, and cross-cultural conflicts.
  • study systematic means of conflict resolution.
  • investigate the alternative of non-violent problem solving.
  • apply religious and moral values to issues of justice and peace.
