Holy Cross students attend orientation for community-based learning projects at the Boys and Girls Club of Worcester

The Donelan Office of Community-Based Learning, established with a $1.2 million endowment from Trustee and alumnus Joseph P. Donelan II, opened in September 2001.

Community-based learning provides opportunities for faculty and students to combine experiential learning in the Worcester community. Courses with community-based learning components at the College of the Holy Cross are courses that include an experiential learning component, involving service in a church, community or public service organization, or an education or health institution. Placement usually involves a weekly 2-2.5 hour session at the community site, for a total of 15-20 hours per semester.

Students from the Worcester Public Schools visit Holy Cross. Prof. Carolyn Howe, Sociology and Latin American and Latino Studies, and Holy Cross students in her courses "Latinos in the U.S." and "Experience in Latino Education" organized and staffed an after-school program for bilingual students in collaboration with the Worcester Working Coalition for Latino Students and Worcester State College
