The
Multidisciplinary Major in Asian Studies is a template
major administered through the Center for Interdisciplinary
and Special Studies (CISS.)
The
major is by application only (see below). Students normally
apply no later than the second semester of their
junior year.
Application

29, 2006; Spring: February 9, 2007
Students
may choose between two template majors in Asian Studies
- The
Asian Studies Major
- The
Chinese Language and Civilization Major
The
Asian Studies Major:
This consists of 10 courses, as follows:
- History
104, "Perspectives on Asia: Modern Transformations,"
or History 103, "Perspectives on Asia: 'Traditional'
East Asia."
Students who apply for the major after their sophomore
year may either take History 104 or 103, or one
cross-regional courses from the following list:
Anthro 2__, "Art and Power in Asia."
Anthro 3__, "Gender and Globalization in Asia"
History 299, "Law and Human Rights in China."
Religious Studies 204, "Hinduism"
Religious Studies 206, "Buddhism"
Religious Studies 214, "The Modernization of
Asian Religions: Seminar"
Political Science 324, "East Asian Development."
- One
course in the arts of Asia (included here are the
anthropology of Asian art selections, art courses
on East Asian art history survey offered through CISS,
Asian studio art courses, Asian literature courses,
and any of the Theatre and Music Departments' many
courses on the Balinese performing arts).
- One
history course on Asia (Note: if a student has taken
History 103 or 104 to fulfill the cross-regional requirement,
he or she must still take another history course on
a region of Asia).
- One
course in Religious Studies, on Asia.
- One
course drawn from any of the social sciences (anthropology,
economics, political science, sociology) on Asia.
- Five
additional courses on Asia selected by the individual
student. These courses can be chosen thematically,
or geographically. Consult with a faculty advisor
for advice here. Language classes in an Asian language
may be used as electives here; consult with the Asian
Studies Director on this for the rules here.

The
Chinese Language and Civilization Major:
- Perspectives
on Asia (Hist 103 or Hist 104) OR another course with
a broad focus on Asia
- Four
(4) semesters of Chinese language above the elementary
level
- One
(1) course in Chinese history
- Four
(4) additional non-language courses with a significant
focus on China selected from at least two (2) different
disciplines.
Study
in the
Holy Cross program in China is highly recommended.

a portion of the requirements towards the major.
