Originally founded as African American Studies in 1990, the Africana Studies concentration offers students an academic and experiential program in African American, Caribbean, and African subjects. The experience of being African American in the United States provides a point of departure in the required introductory course, where emphasis is placed on the rich history and cultures of the peoples of Africa and the Africana Diaspora. Including courses in both the humanities and the social sciences, the concentration electives give students an opportunity to explore the complex nature of U.S. race relations, racial identity, and political movements of African and African American peoples.
