Requirements and Offerings in this Concentration:
- Completion of six courses on Latin America or Latinos. No more than two courses in any one department may count towards the concentration. At least one course must be in History and it is recommended that students take two history courses.
- Completion of the college's language requirement in Spanish and one course beyond Intermediate Spanish II must be taken. This course will usually be Spanish Composition and Conversation and does not count as one of the six required courses.
- Intro to Literary Genres in the Spanish Program will count as one of the six courses towards the concentration. We encourage students to take literature courses above the level of "Genres."
- Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Perspectives on Latin America (offered as LALS 101).
- Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in at least one seminar, directed reading, or internship as a Senior Capstone experience that allows them to focus more carefuly on a given problem.
- Students
are also strongly encouraged to participate in Study Abroad
in Latin America, especially the Puebla and Peru Programs. Students who apply to participate in these programs must
have taken at least two thematic courses in the program including
Mexican History and completed the language requirement.

- Students whose interest is in Latino Studies are encouraged to develop a Community-Based Learning Project (CBL) in conjunction with Worcester Organizations. These include:
- Latino Education Institute at Worcester State College
- Centro las Americas
- The Nativity School of Worcester
- Students may count one coursenot offered by program faculty towards the program requirments if the coure has a significant Latin America component. Inclusion of such a course in the Latin American Studies track must be approved by the program director.
- Students are encouraged to participate in the regular series of events sponsored by the program
- Latino Month Events in October
- Films series and special showings
- Visiting lecturers
- Partnership with Witness for Peace
- Special focus on Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador
- Faculty presentations
- Cinco de Mayo end of year party
- Forums and presentations on Study abroad in Puebla, Mexico
and Lima, Peru
- Career forums with recent graduates of the program
- Keep an on new pragrams:
- A Senior Capstone Seminar
- Semester on the Border Program in Texas or Arizona
- Collaboration with Urban Semester in NY City
- More developed Service Learning Courses
- Template for an Inter-disciplinary Major in Larin American or Latino Studies
- Student-Faculty trips to Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico
- A new study abroad site in Peru.
To Enroll in the Latin American and Latino Studies Program:
Complete the Concentration application process (see Susan Cunningham CISS, 3rd Floor Smith Hall) or contact Program Director, Prof. Cynthia Stone. Students are encourgaed to apply before the end of second semester, Sophomore Year. Plan out a program of course work in consultation with the Program Coordinator or any other profesor in the program. Upon graduation the student's transcript will list your Concentration and you will receive a certificate to celebrate your accomplishment.
