Requirements for the LALS Concentration
  1. Completion of six approved courses on Latin America or Latinos, including Montserrat courses designated for LALS credit.  No more than two courses in any one discipline may count towards the Concentration.  At least one course must be in History.
  2. Completion of Spanish Composition and Conversation (SPAN 301), Spanish for Bilingual Speakers (SPAN 317), or demonstration of equivalent facility in spoken and written Spanish. Courses taken to satisfy the language requirement do not count towards the six courses required for the Concentration.
  3. Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Perspectives on Latin America (offered as LALS 101) as an interdisciplinary introduction to the field.
  4. Concentrators with an interest in Latino Studies are encouraged to enroll in at least one course with a Community-Based Learning (CBL) component involving collaboration with Worcester-area organizations such as Centro las Américas, The Latino Education Institute at Worcester State College, and The Nativity School of Worcester. Relevant courses include Perspectives on Latin America, Afro-Latin History, Urban Education, Aspects of Spanish-American Culture, and Spanish in the US.
  5. Junior concentrators are encouraged to enroll in a seminar, directed reading, or internship as a Senior Capstone experience that allows them to focus more intensively on a given topic. Concentrators completing capstone projects participate in the Holy Cross Academic Conference in April.
  6. Up to two courses on Latin American or Latino topics can be applied towards the Concentration for students studying abroad in Spanish-speaking countries, and up to three courses for students who participate in Study Abroad in Latin America. For more information on study abroad opportunities in Latin America, contact Jeannie LaPlatney at the Study Abroad office or the Latin American and Latino Studies Director, Prof. Cynthia Stone.
  7. Students may petition to have one Holy Cross course not offered by program faculty apply towards Concentration requirements if the course has a significant Latin American or Latino component. Inclusion of such a course in the Latin American Studies track must be approved by the LALS Director.
  8. Students are encouraged to participate in the regular series of co-curricular programming sponsored and co-sponsored by LALS, including:
    • Latino Month, September 15-October 15
    • Special forums and colloquia on topics of community interest
    • Faculty, student, and alumni presentations
    • Informational presentations and pre-departure orientations for Study Abroad
    • Presentations on community-based learning, study abroad, and senior capstone projects
    • Lectures by visiting scholars and activists
    • Films series and special showings
    • Publication of creative writing and artwork of Hispanic inspiration in the bilingual journal fósforo: Revista de Inspiración Hispánica
    • End-of-year (Cinco de Mayo) celebration of graduating seniors

To Enroll in the Program

Complete the Concentration application process (see Susan Cunningham CISS, 3rd Floor Smith Hall) or contact Program Director, Prof. Cynthia Stone. Students are encouraged to apply before the end of second semester, Sophomore Year. Plan out a program of course work in consultation with the Program Director or any other professor in the program. Upon graduation the student transcript will list your Concentration and you will receive a special cord and certificate to celebrate your accomplishment.
