Individual Counseling

The Counseling Center offers individual counseling services to students who wish to discuss a variety of personal and educational concerns. The following is a summary of some of the major issues students talk about in individual personal counseling:

Academic:

  • Test anxiety and study skills 
  • Public speaking anxiety
  • Uncertainty about majors and course selection
  • Sexual harassment
  • Inappropriate and unprofessional behavior (e.g. racism, sexism)

Family:

  • Homesickness
  • Difficulty establishing independence from family
  • Divorce or other relationship difficulties between parents
  • Illness or death of a relative
  • Substance abuse by a family member
  • Emotional, physical and sexual abuse

Peer:

  • Roommate conflicts
  • Difficulty forming and maintaining friendships/romantic relationships
  • Ending romantic relationships
  • Violence between students
  • Sexual harassment, assault and rape
  • Racism, sexism, classism and forms of discrimination

Intrapersonal:

  • Identity formation and goal setting
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Suicide and other life-threatening behavior
  • Substance abuse/dependency
  • Sexual decision-making, sexual orientation
