Individual Counseling
The Counseling Center offers individual counseling services to students who wish to discuss a variety of personal and educational concerns. The following is a summary of some of the major issues students talk about in individual personal counseling:
Academic:
- Test anxiety and study skills
- Public speaking anxiety
- Uncertainty about majors and course selection
- Sexual harassment
- Inappropriate and unprofessional behavior (e.g. racism, sexism)
Family:
- Homesickness
- Difficulty establishing independence from family
- Divorce or other relationship difficulties between parents
- Illness or death of a relative
- Substance abuse by a family member
- Emotional, physical and sexual abuse
Peer:
- Roommate conflicts
- Difficulty forming and maintaining friendships/romantic relationships
- Ending romantic relationships
- Violence between students
- Sexual harassment, assault and rape
- Racism, sexism, classism and forms of discrimination
Intrapersonal:
- Identity formation and goal setting
- Anxiety and depression
- Eating disorders
- Suicide and other life-threatening behavior
- Substance abuse/dependency
- Sexual decision-making, sexual orientation
