What Happens if you Want to Report a Sexual Assault?
People with whom you can meet:
The College of the Holy Cross will assist a survivor of a sexual assault in any way feasible, by assisting in obtaining medical help (including transportation to a hospital), psychological services, spiritual counseling, filing a report with authorities on campus and/or off campus, contacting family and friends, providing temporary housing, etc.
Survivors of sexual assault/rape are strongly encouraged to file a report with authorities on and/or off campus as soon as possible even if you are unsure as to whether you will seek prosecution of the assailant. By filing a report immediately, there is no commitment to seek prosecution. However, the closer in time the report is filed to the date of the assault/rape, the more credibly the report may be viewed should you wish to seek prosecution at a later time.
If you wish to file a report with off campus authorities, the College will provide all assistance necessary to facilitate the filing of the report. The survivor may choose to go directly to the police department to file the report. If necessary and/or desired, the College will provide transportation for the survivor for this purpose.
The survivor may otherwise choose to have the police come to campus. The College can arrange for a discreet and private place to meet for this purpose. If you wish to file a report with authorities on campus, the trained sexual assault officer in the Department of Public Safety is available to meet with you to receive your report. You may indicate your preference as to whether your report is to be maintained by Public Safety without further investigation and/or adjudication on campus. If you so indicate, the College will maintain the confidentiality of the report to the extent permitted by law. The College reserves the right to investigate and adjudicate a report when it is deemed necessary to protect the interests of the College community.
