Career Services
In your work as an RA or PE you will no doubt encounter many students who are not sure about what they plan to do after graduation. When students express this concern to you please encourage them to make use of the Career Planning Center services which are available to them. The earlier students become involved in the career planning process the better.
For those students who have not established a career objective, several resources are available including Career Planning Workshops and Groups, Individual Career Counseling and career interest Assessment.
Once students have identified areas of potential interest they need to acquire accurate information about the selected career fields The Career Resource Room, Hogan 203, contains career literature on just about every career field of interest to Holy Cross students. After reading about various careers, students are encouraged to speak with graduates of the College who are employed in the field of interest.
The Career Advisors Network lists close to 2,000 graduates of the College who have volunteered to speak with students about their careers.
The next step in the career development process involves gaining practical experience in the field. This may be accomplished through The College Venture Program, an internship, a summer or part-time job, or volunteer experiences. Information and specific opportunities are available for all of these avenues in the Career Resource Room.
The final step in the career development process is implementation. For those planning to pursue graduate studies, the Career Resource Room contains the Peterson's Guides to Graduate School Studies as well as catalogues from several graduate and law schools. The Resource Room also contains a great deal of information about potential employers as well as directories, periodicals, and other job search resources.
In addition to individual counseling, career planning staff offer a variety of workshops to assist students in their job search. The Office also manages the on-campus and off-campus recruiting programs which provide opportunities for seniors to interview with prospective employers.
As you can see, the career planning process is quite involved. Please encourage students to begin the process early.
