Developmental Tasks of College Students

Adolescence and early adulthood are times of profound development change. Understanding that college students are challenged with a number of important tasks, the Center has designed its programs and services to support students during this phase of development.  Among the challenges college students face are:

  1. Developing an integrated sense of self. This includes refining and gaining confidence in a stable self-image and identity. It also involves opportunities to make important life decisions and take responsibility for one's actions. Students may come to terms with events from the past and redefine relationships with their families and others.
  2. Forging respectful and enduring relationships with other people. This involves opportunities to exercise personal capacities for warmth, caring and intimacy. Students may also learn to understand and even appreciate those who are different from themselves.
  3. Forming a realistic sense of personal and intellectual strengths and weaknesses. The years at Holy Cross are ones in which students are challenged to discover and develop their talents as well as to recognize their limitations.
  4. Discovering individual meaning and purpose in life. Students have an opportunity to chart future intellectual, personal, career and spiritual direction.
