Julie Halpin '84 is CEO of The Geppetto Group, a New York-based youth marketing consultancy and advertising agency. She recently participated in the Holy Cross Women in Business Conference, held in September.
The speakers—and the women participating in discussions throughout the event—represented themselves as the multi-dimensional, multi-talented women of integrity they are. What, if anything, surprised you about the experience as a speaker at the conference?
I was so impressed with the collection of women I met. Every time I turned around and had another conversation, I found myself in the presence of a woman who was smart, engaging, thoughtful, interesting…and real. I only wish I had 100 job openings at Geppetto because I think I could have filled them all over the course of this event.
Is there any one memory from the two days that will stay with you, or stand out as you go forward in your own business?
For me, the single most memorable and most poignant moment was Sheila Cavanaugh '81 [a senior vice president at Fidelity Investments] and her speech. She embodies all that is Holy Cross and is the type of woman—in business, in life, as a mother, friend, and as a socially conscious citizen—that I hope to be. She reminded me of the importance of compassion, the imperative of ethics, the power of gratitude, and the benefit of humor in all that we do—even in business.
After participating in the event and as an advertising guru, how would you brand the next event to attract alumnae who did not get to the first one?
The Holy Cross Women in Business conference gathers and celebrates the unique aptitudes of Holy Cross women who've chosen business as the place to express their professional selves. It's equal parts networking, reflecting, laughing, thinking, and appreciating…a welcome respite and a rare treat in a busy life.
