Ellis Scholarship

Created by the Ellis family estate in 1941, the Ellis Scholarship is a four-year, full tuition scholarship awarded annually to a high school senior who is a resident of Worcester.   The scholarship is named in honor of Theodore T. Ellis, the late owner and publisher of the Worcester Telegram and the Evening Gazette, and Mary G. Ellis, his wife.  Ellis owned the newspapers from 1919 to 1925, during which time he combined the two papers for the first time.  At the time of his death in 1934, he was vice president and part owner of the Chicago Daily News and president of the New England Fibre Blanket Company.

The Holy Cross Admissions Committee will select a recipient of the Ellis Scholarship each year based on academic excellence and personal strengths, while taking into account the financial need of the family.  Students attending a public, private or Catholic high school are eligible.

To be considered for the scholarship, students should do the following:

    1. Submit the Ellis Scholarship (.pdf) application by January 1, 2008, with a current transcript and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor.
    2. File the Common Application to Holy Cross by January 15, 2008.
    3. Have an admissions interview by December 28, 2007.
    4. Submit the CSS Profile and FAFSA forms by February 1, 2008.
    5. Answer one of the following questions in 500 words or less and submit on a separate sheet of paper:

      • One of the various taglines that describes Worcester’s ongoing revitalization and development states that Worcester is “The city on the move.”  With the lens of a Worcester resident, describe one direction in which you would like these development projects to take Worcester.
      • There are different sides of Worcester and those who are not familiar with the city have various differing impressions of it.  How would you describe Worcester and “sell” the city to someone who is not familiar with the city?
