The Department of Classics and the College of the Holy Cross offer competitive merit-based scholarships to outstanding high school graduates who will major in the Classics at Holy Cross. Each year, going back to the Class of 1977, we award two Rev. Henry Bean, S.J., Scholarships, which are four-year, full-tuition, merit-based scholarships. Every four years, including for the Class of 2020, we also award a full-tuition, merit-based Rev. William Fitzgerald, S.J., Scholarship.  Fenwick Hall

Candidates are expected to have a strong background (equivalent of four years) in Latin and/or Greek, and significant academic achievement in all other subjects and on standardized tests. While standardized test scores are not required for admission to Holy Cross, candidates for the Bean and Fitzgerald scholarships are required to submit their scores on the standardized tests (SAT Math, Verbal and Writing, Latin SAT II, and/or Latin AP Exam) they have taken.

The Bean Scholarship was instituted in 1973 by Rev. John Brooks, S.J., President of the College from 1970 to 1994. Fr. Brooks named the scholarship after Rev. Henry Bean, S.J., who had taught him Latin and Greek at Holy Cross in the 1940s. The Fitzgerald Scholarship is named after Rev. William Fitzgerald, S.J., who taught in the Department from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The scholarship is renewable annually, provided that the student maintains a strong academic record and continues to be a prominent Classics major. Joining the ranks of more than sixty Classics majors at Holy Cross, Bean and Fitzgerald scholars work closely with professors who are dedicated to the teaching of undergraduates. Scholars take a minimum of 14 courses in Classics. Past scholars have gone on to successful careers in academia / education, medicine, law, business, government, and technology. A visit to Holy Cross is not a requirement, but applicants are strongly encouraged to arrange for an interview by phone, online, or in person during the Fall semester. Applications are due January 15, 2017. Final notifications about the scholarships are coordinated with the Office of Admissions.

In addition to the application required by the Holy Cross Office of Admissions, applicants for Bean and Fitzgerald Classics Scholarships must also send to the Chair, Department of Classics:

  1. This Application Form along with a Personal Essay in which you describe your background in Classical studies and your plans and aims for being a leader in these studies at Holy Cross.
  2. At least two letters of recommendation from your high school teachers, sent under separate cover; one letter must be from a Classics teacher and should be sure to include an evaluation of the student’s proficiency in the languages.
